Access to Care is the Number One Standard Often Violated in Jails and Prisons in the United States
When I first started working corrections as a nurse, I would often work with other colleagues who would admonish the patients who requested medical care. This was very puzzling to me because according to the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC), standard A-01 was developed specifically outlining the patients right to access healthcare during their stay of incarceration in any facility. Watch the video as the nurse sees the patient for less than one minute, I can assure you that this is not what the NCCHC had in mind, when they developed this very important standard. An patient MUST have access to healthcare at all stages of their incarceration. At Correct Consultants, we specialize in training medial staff and correctional staff on what it means for a patient to access healthcare in their facility.
